The tragic disappearance of Indore couple Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya has taken a dark and unexpected turn. Raja’s body was discovered on June 2, eight days after the couple went missing on May 23, in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Sohra (Cherrapunji). Authorities were able to identify the body using a tattoo on his right hand, and the recovery was made possible through the use of drone surveillance and rescue teams navigating the treacherous terrain.

Soon after the body was recovered, the Meghalaya Police registered a murder case and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT). A blood-stained machete was found at the crime scene, raising suspicions of a premeditated homicide. The investigation revealed even more shocking details when Sonam Raghuvanshi, the victim’s wife, surrendered to police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh after 17 days. Based on police reports and confessions from arrested suspects, Sonam is accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder by hiring three contract killers. A local tour guide had informed authorities that Raja and Sonam were last seen with three unidentified men in Sohra on May 23, which later proved crucial in tracking down the suspects.
The case has sparked outrage and deep concern. The National Commission for Women (NCW) intervened, urging the Meghalaya Director General of Police to thoroughly investigate all leads, including the possibility of a larger conspiracy. In response, the Meghalaya police have intensified the search operations using drones, sniffer dogs, and coordination with the NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers.

Despite Sonam’s surrender, her family maintains that she is innocent and claims she was wrongly implicated. They also assert that Sonam went missing along with Raja and should still be treated as a victim. The Meghalaya Chief Minister and DGP have assured the public that the investigation is being handled with utmost seriousness and transparency.
As the probe continues, police are examining CCTV footage, phone records, and other forensic evidence to uncover the full scope of the plot. The brutal nature of the case has reignited calls for enhanced tourist safety and better surveillance in remote travel destinations like Sohra.
