An 85-year-old man from Bengaluru, Karnataka, has become the first reported COVID-19 fatality of 2025 in the state. The elderly patient was admitted to a private hospital in Whitefield on May 13 with symptoms including multi-organ failure and respiratory distress. Despite medical intervention, he passed away on May 17. A COVID-19 test done prior to his death returned positive on May 24, confirming the cause.

This case has raised public health concerns amid a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru, where 32 new cases were recently recorded, taking the state’s active caseload to 38. The Karnataka Health Department has since ramped up testing and contact tracing.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has reassured the public, stating the situation is under control and there is no immediate cause for alarm. However, the case underscores the importance of continued vigilance, especially for senior citizens and those with comorbidities.
