In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the nation, a 17-year-old girl named Aastha was brutally murdered by her own mother and family members in the Partapur area of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, over an alleged love affair. The incident occurred in early June 2025, and police recovered her headless body from a canal on June 7.
Initial reports revealed that Aastha was in a relationship her family disapproved of. Despite repeated warnings and opposition from her family, she continued to communicate with her boyfriend. This infuriated her mother and other close relatives, culminating in a cold-blooded honor killing. The mother, along with four others—including a minor—allegedly beheaded Aastha using a bolt cutter, an act that has stunned both authorities and the public alike.
The girl’s body was discovered dumped in the Gang Nahar canal, and police quickly began investigating the matter. Suspicion fell on the family, and upon interrogation, several members confessed to their involvement. The police arrested the mother and four others. The minor has been taken into custody and will be dealt with according to juvenile justice laws.

Authorities have recovered the weapon used in the murder and are continuing forensic investigations. According to the police, the act was premeditated, and all five individuals had roles in carrying out the crime.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups, child protection advocates, and the general public. Many are questioning how such deep-rooted violence can take place within a family, especially in the name of honor. The incident once again raises critical concerns about women’s safety, freedom of choice, and regressive social norms still prevalent in parts of India.
The police have promised a swift investigation and have confirmed that a charge sheet will be filed soon under relevant sections of the IPC, including murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence.
