Odisha Launches ‘Stop Diarrhoea’ Campaign Ahead of Monsoon Season

The Government of Odisha has launched a large-scale public health initiative titled the “Stop Diarrhoea” campaign across the southern districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal. This drive, beginning June 16 and continuing until July 31, aims to curb diarrhoeal outbreaks during the high-risk monsoon season. With children under five years old being particularly vulnerable, the campaign is focused on raising awareness, improving sanitation, and ensuring the availability of preventive medicines at the grassroots level. The state’s Health and Family Welfare Department, in coordination with local bodies, is spearheading the outreach with ASHA and health workers conducting door-to-door visits, distributing Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and zinc tablets, and educating families on hygiene practices, especially handwashing and safe drinking water.

Water chlorination is a major component of the campaign, with officials regularly treating community wells and tube wells to reduce contamination risks. The initiative also includes setting up ORS-zinc corners at government health facilities and Anganwadi centers, making treatment more accessible to rural populations. The campaign is designed to reduce childhood mortality and prevent community-wide outbreaks, especially in tribal and underserved areas where diarrhoea remains a leading cause of illness. The state is also integrating efforts to address other vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria during the same period.

Also watch – Strict action should be taken against those who’re using thai childrens.

The program reflects Odisha’s preventive health strategy, emphasizing early intervention and cross-department coordination among health, water supply, and education bodies. As a proactive response to seasonal health threats, it aligns with national goals under the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) and shows how targeted local interventions can address public health vulnerabilities.
